Charities
As a church, Westlea Church supports a number of charities. From all income 10% is given to charities nominated by the membership of the church. Two charities are supported for 3-5 years and one charity is chosen on an annual basis.
Currently the charities are:
- Tearfund - Tearfund is a Christian relief and development agency working with a global network of local churches to help eradicate poverty.
- emerge project - This is a project that was originally set up as a partnership with the Ncounter group and is now run solely by the Partnership. Its aim is to provide activities to young people to follow on to the work of the Collective school visits.
- Swindon Food Bank - Supports those who are struggling in Swindon. As well as financial support, on the first Sunday of each month we are collecting donations of provisions for the Food Bank. If you have any donations you wish to pass to the Food Bank please pass them to us any Sunday, in addition at our harvest festival service we have also collected goods and donations for the Food Bank.
To encourage the younger members of our church to consider their giving:
- We sponsor a a child, through the Toybox charity. Toybox is a Christian charity committed to providing hope for the most disadvantaged children, young people and their families, principally in Latin America.
We support The Filling Station, a local charity helping the homeless around Swindon, through preparing sandwiches and providing provisions and clothing, which are then distributed. In 2009 they were awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
We support Christian Aid by helping with the annual collection during Christian Aid week in our area.
There are many other charities we support on an adhoc basis including digging wells in Africa, Nursery schools in the Philippines, Swindon Harbour Project, Christmas Child etc.
